Owned by Forestry Commission Scotland since 1929 this attractive woodland is dominated by almost 200 varieties of common and unusual shrubs and specimen trees.
The Forest Garden contains many interesting and ornamental tree species including the British “Champion” specimens of goat willow and Sakhalin spruce, and also the most northerly specimen of Italian Cypress in the UK.
Lael contains a number of unusual ‘forest plots’, en masse plantings of different species to test their suitability for productive forestry. These plots are a half-way-house between traditional Victorian plantings and modern forestry.
